Family Animal Rescue Volunteering Projects South Africa

Animal rescue volunteering projects are crying out for help, and you can make a huge difference with your kids. It will be a truly enriching experience for all of you.

Horse Rehabilitation Project in South Africa

horse rehabilitation

What you need to know

First and foremost families are welcome and kids have to be aged from 12 upwards.

This project is a great opportunity to work hands on with horses on the South African coast. Any takers for a South African volunteer adventure holiday of note? Well this is for you!

The whole ethos behind the project is to care for previously abused and neglected horses, but besides rehabilitation you and your kids will get to help out with beach and bush horse trails. What fun! And not only that, you get to experience the amazing surroundings of the Indian Ocean, the beaches, the dolphins, the dunes, and of course the horses! How cool is that?

What will you do?

Basically you’ll all work with horses on a daily basis and you don’t have to be an experienced rider at all; if you know the basics then great, but they accommodate all levels and will tailor the experience to meet the needs of your family. So besides helping these amazing animals out, you could all learn to ride horses, if you don’t know already, and that in itself makes for an exciting adventure! So, use your experiences in the big wide world later, or put it down to an awesome life experience.

The horses that you will work with will need to believe in and trust in humans again, so this is a great opportunity for your kids to connect with these amazing animals. Did you know that horses are often used in child therapy? So, your kids can really build a great connection.

The number of volunteers is a maximum of 6 and you’ll sleep in a cottage not far away.

The kind of activities you’ll take place in is preparing and feeding the horses, checking their water and looking at their overall physical condition. You can then choose to both ride on a beach trail and help prepare for that or work in the rehabilitation centre with specific horses doing chores like dipping and grooming. There is a daily routine in place, but this can change dependant on weather. You’ll normally work for 5 days out of 7, leaving you some time to explore the stunning surroundings. You can visit private game reserves, go to the local beach for a dip in the ocean, sunbathe, play volleyball or surf. Choose your passion and go for it.

How will you make a difference?

You’ll be giving these animals some much needed TLC that have suffered abuse and neglect in the past. Your time with the horses will be improving their quality of life.

Other Important Information

They educate and encourage you to understand and respect the local cultures and customs and get involved with local communities.

The majority of the fee that you pay goes directly to the project. The project is family run and provides employment for local South African people.

One of the main negative impacts of volunteers travelling is the carbon dioxide created from flights. They work with a ‘carbon neutral’ charity to reduce the carbon footprint through tree planting or the promotion of low energy technologies.

Monkey Rescue, South Africa

What you need to know

The project accepts kids from the ages of 13 and up.

You’ll work hands on with a number of primate species, and this is a highly respected rescue centre. You’ll also learn about their behaviour, how to take care of them and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore South Africa if you want to.

How will you make a difference?

By volunteering here you’ll contribute to improving the quality of life for the primates as they’ll get more individual attention. You’ll leave a lasting impression on these awesome animals. Your contribution as a volunteering family plays a major role for the sanctuary as they pretty much survive entirely on the financial and hands on support from volunteers. So you know you’ll be making a big difference. How cool for your kids to get to care for monkeys!

Now this is quite something. You’ll help stimulate and enrich these cool primates, and this is essential for their well-being as they can’t be released into the wild again.

What will you do?

You’ll be working around 5 days a week from around 6am to 6pm, but it works on a rota basis so that you can take some time off to travel around the local areas. You’ll help with feeding, giving medication, supplements and of course treats…what monkey doesn’t like a treat? You’ll top up their water and food again. There are also other things you’ll do like preparing food, cleaning their enclosures, record keeping, watching their behaviour, making monkey beds, keeping them stimulated and hand rearing, if there’s an opportunity when you get there. Then you’ll take part in ‘monkey time’ so you can spend time with them and get to know them. Awesome!

If one of you is in construction, cool, as they’re always looking for people to help maintain, improve and build enclosures.

There are usually around 8-15 volunteers at the project at any one time with a maximum of 30.

Other Important Information

The sanctuary has been running since 1996 with an excellent reputation. They care for over 100 primates of different species including marmosets, tamarins, mona monkeys, squirrel monkeys, macaques, and lemurs. The sanctuary rescues and provides permanent care for any primate from anywhere in the world. They are always getting requests to help with the international rescue of primates. A lot of them arrive with behavioural problems and need rehabilitation.

The sanctuary is located in Pretoria, which is approximately 45 minutes north of Johannesburg.

You can use your free time to relax venture out for other adventures.  Due to its great location you could even get the chance to visit the Kruger National Park which is a must.

The volunteer house is inside the centre so you are only a walk away from the primates. You will be in shared rooms in the house with access to a shower, washing and cooking facilities, which are also shared with other volunteers.

Visit their website for more information.

If you’re looking for family animal rescue volunteering projects in South Africa, then these are definitely worth a look.
