Little Known Facts about USA

usa.fun.facts

We’ve searched high and low to bring you some of the coolest and little known facts about the USA. Do you have any other interesting ones up your sleeve, which we haven’t covered?

  • Do you think that the moon landing actually happened? Well if you don’t then you’re similar to the 27% of all Americans who believe that the moon landing was staged and never actually happened.
  • Did you know that the seven rays on top of the Statue of Liberty’s crown represent the seven continents? Well they’re pretty massive too! Each one of them is up to 9 foot in length (2.7 metres) and weighs 150 pounds (68 kilograms) each. Considering that the lady of liberty is 305 feet (93 metres) tall those rays are fairly sizable in comparison.
  • So, the government wanted to stop people from drinking during the Prohibition era, during the 20’s and 30’s, especially alcohol that was stolen from bootleggers and then sold ‘underground’ so to speak. The government had tried everything, and were frustrated to their core at how much people were still drinking. So what did they do? Apparently they poisoned barrels of alcohol to stop these nasty ways. Unfortunately, this didn’t pan out too well, as it caused the deaths of over 10,000 people.
  • This will blow your mind! At least 100 acres of pizza are served up in their delicious form, every single day! That’s a lot of pizza.
  • In 1776 2.5 million people lived in the US and today it’s an absolutely massive 314 million!
  • How much chocolate do you think Americans eat? Well they eat 100 pounds of the delicious brown stuff every second!
  • This is funny…there are at least 97 people in the US called ‘Lol’ –with our new age ‘language’ it could get a bit confusing.
  • If you’re American and you’re tweeting, well be prepared that every single tweet is being stored and archived by the Library of Congress. Best you watch those tweets!
  • Take a close look at the American $1 bill. Can you see anything strange? Well each $1 bill has hidden images in it; one of them being a spider in the upper right-hand corner. What in the world could that mean?
  • The US actually has no ‘official’ language, as it was never declared. Even though English is the most widely spoken language it’s not official. In some states however, they do declare English as their official language. If you’re quite keen on getting English declared official in your state then you can actually contact elected officials, and they could help!
  • At their closest point Russia and America are only 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) apart from each other.
  • One adult American uses a whole heap of resources. Each one uses as much as 32 Kenyans use in a week.
  • Amazingly over 35 million Americans share some of the same DNA with at least one of the 102 pilgrims who arrived on the fine shores on the Mayflower in 1620.
  • 20 million Americans live in trailers and mobile homes. But this hasn’t necessarily got to do with income, for many Americans it’s a choice. As one American told the BBC, picking a mobile home was actually more about freedom, so that they could move their home around wherever they wanted. But if they had ‘fixed’ home so to speak, they can’t exactly just pack up and go!
  • This is quite surprising. Going to college? Then you’re going to have to cough up for those textbooks. College textbook prices are the fastest rising prices when you compare it to housing, health care and inflation.
  • Did you know that the Venus flytrap plant is only found in the Carolinas in the US? If you find them anywhere else in the world, then they’ve been imported!
  • Up until 1836 Christmas was illegal in the US because it was seen as a pagan holiday. It didn’t go down all that well with the Christian Ideals of the government.
  • This is amazing. The largest number bill ever issued by the United States was the $10, 000 bill.
  • Now how this fact is known, nobody really knows, but apparently at least one in 25 of prisoners sentenced to death in the US are innocent.
  • The US government appears to quite like printing documents. Each year they spend a massive $1.8 billion on this alone. That is a lot of paperwork.
  • There are some really weird laws in some states in America. Here’s a few for fun; in Alabama it’s illegal to wear a false moustache to church as it makes the entire congregation laugh! In Alaska it’s illegal to give alcohol to a moose and in California it is illegal to set up a mousetrap without a hunting license. In Arkansas don’t be hooting your horn in front of a place that sells sandwiches and cool drinks after 9pm! Right, no false moustaches, no alcohol for moose’s, no mousetraps and no honking. Do that and you’re a good law abiding citizen.
  • The late, great Nelson Mandela was kept on the US terrorist watch list until 2008, even though he’d been released from prison in 1990! Maybe they forgot to remove his name!
  • Unbelievably almost 50% of the entire world’s credit card fraud happens in the US.
  • Not sure we should know this, but the launch code for all US nuclear minutemen missiles for 20 years was 00000000. Obviously it’s been changed!
  • In 2012, more US soldiers committed suicide than were killed in action during the war in Afghan, which was the longest war in US history. That is seriously sad!
  • It seems that Ronald Reagan was given a bit of preference when he was elected as president. He was the only president to ever be elected that had been divorced before. All the other presidents have been married.
  • Guess how much food the average adult consumers during their lifetime? Any guesses? Well it’s a whopping 35 tonnes!
  • There is only one place in the US that has natural grown coffee, and that’s Hawaii. All the other coffee is imported.
  • Strange but true…Jimmy Carter was the first US president to ever be born in a hospital.
  • Right, we know that Bill Gates is one seriously wealthy man. But, if he gave every last cent of his fortune over to the US government, it would cover their deficit for a measly 15 days! That’s crazy.
  • McDonald’s seems to be quite a hit of an employer…at least 1 in every 8 Americans has been employed by them during their lives. So that’s clearly the place to earn a living.
  • The average American changes their job every 4.4 years. But that’s not bad when you consider the ‘millennials’ (born between 1977 and 1997) who change their jobs about every 3 years. It’s the new norm, but this means that they’ll have about 20 jobs in their lifetime!
  • George Washington had a few secrets up his sleeve, and apparently grew large amounts of cannabis on his home plantation. Wonder what he did with all of it.
  • Now who would have thought this…Thomas Jefferson invented the swivel chair.
  • Ever wondered where the Secret Service comes from? Well Abraham Lincoln created this elite bunch just a couple of hours before he was assassinated. It clearly didn’t work too well for him!
  • James Garfield, the 20th president of the US was ambidextrous. But not just your normal ambidextrous…he wrote Greek with his right hand and Latin with his left hand, at the same time.
  • John F Kennedy was a huge James Bond fan! This is cool…when he met Ian Fleming he asked the legend how he could overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba!
  • Did you know that Barack Obama is a comic book collector? Who would’ve thought? His favourite comic books are Spiderman and Conan the Barbarian comics.
  • So, the grizzly bear is California’s official state animal…but not one has been seen there since 1922!

We could probably go on forever, but these are some of the cool facts we’ve found. What have we missed? Share your cool facts with us!
