So you’ve got that destination in your mind, and all you can think about is that dream adventure of a holiday with the kids! A lifetime experience that you just don’t want to miss out on! There’s just one small, okay large, problem…you don’t have the money for it, so out the window the dream starts to go! Absolutely not, you can do it and you will do it, and we’re going to show you how!
If you put your mind to something and create that goal or dream, nothing in the world can stop you! So write that dream holiday down; think about where you want to go, when you want to go, what you want to do…when it’s all written down nice and neatly it makes it more real and you can turn the seemingly impossible into the possible!
What’s it going to cost you?
Before you start out on making your dream a reality, use life’s little best friend, good old Google. Check out what the approximate costs will be. Check out the costs of flights, accommodation, and your bucket list of things to do while you’re there, pocket money and living expenses while you’re there. This will give you an idea of what you’re working towards. Now you’ve got a rough idea of how much cash you need in the bank for your dream trip.
The next thing to do is open a savings account, so you can stash away all the extra bits of money you get. If you’re squirreling away in your normal bank account, nope not a good idea, it will get spent. Shop around for a savings account for the best interest rates and also try and get one that you need to give notice…it just makes it that much more difficult to dig into.
Ideas for saving some cash on a daily basis
The ATM is your Friend
This is a really great way to get the ball rolling. The ATM is your real life piggy bank. Decide together as a family what your weekly allowance is. Then you withdraw that money in cash once a week. That money is it…there is no more where that came from. You all need to stick to the budget come hell or high water! If you have no choice but to exceed it, then take the extra expenditure out of the following week. By having the cash in your paws, it makes you very aware of where your money is going, and you naturally become more aware of where exactly the money is going.
The only way you’re going to have that dream holiday is to sacrifice. Yep, we’re sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re just going to have to forego the little things that add up…ditch the coffee on the way to work, no manicures and pedicures, no lunchtime shopping sprees for food and eat at home as opposed to going out for dinner or ordering takeaways, it’s healthier anyway. Try it for a month and you could be in for a nice little stash of cash surprise! Pack your own lunch for work, make your own coffee and well, cook at home. Work out what you would have normally spent like that and head over to the bank loudly and proudly for that nice little deposit.
Get hooked on EBay
EBay will become your very best friend! You will be amazed at how much you can earn from clearing out the cupboard, the toys and anything else that’s in good working condition. If you haven’t used it for six months, ditch it. Clear that hoarding streak and start selling your goods. Trust us, this will become addictive. Just don’t start selling the stuff you need as you get over excited in your new found money making machine. Of course, this little stash needs to go into that savings account too!
If you do have a credit card, there’s no reason that you can’t switch. Loads of credit cards have got brilliant benefits to them ,like reward systems, and some even often have discounts on airfares, or accommodation or something similar that could get you that much closer to your goal! But often it depends of spending, so don’t go maxing out the credit card to ruin that brilliant savings play you’ve got going!
What is a ‘need’ and what is a ‘want’
Check your budget and decide what you ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ are…okay so obviously food is a need, but is your cable subscription a need or a want? Check what you just can’t live without and what you can. Whatever you can live without, then get rid of it or cancel it. If you have to use a car, can you look at car pools to cut down on extra costs or maybe public transport is cheaper. The idea here is to really analyse what you’re spending on and cut down where necessary. It’s amazing what you can do without when you’re driven by that awesome family adventure. Anything that you decide to let go of goes back into that savings account…watch it grow!
While you’re checking out those savings accounts and credit cards, take a look at your own bank fees. You might be paying way more than other banks. Even if it seems like a hassle, check it out and you could be getting way more for your buck!
Keep those utility bills in check
Although you can’t change the costs, be aware of how much you’re spending on utility bills and change things where you can. Even if you’re saving a bit each month, it can go right back into the travel fund!
