You have probably seen these big grey boxes sitting on top of cars, vans, 4×4’s and trailers….. What are they?
A rooftop tent is an incredible piece of engineering that makes your life easier!
As a camper, you would probably agree that the hardest part about camping is setting up and dismantling your tent – especially when the weather is against you and your camp area is wet and muddy. The greatest feature of these incredible tents is that they are off the ground and there are no poles to fight with during setup! All you need is 10 minutes, 2 pegs and a hammer – that is it! And the pickup is just as easy – plus you can keep all of your bedding in the tent when you pack it up if you are constantly moving – that saves time and packing space!
There are so many brands and manufacturers in the market nowadays, but how do you know which ones are good and which brands to avoid? The old adage “you get what you pay for” comes into play to a certain extent – but keep in mind that some of the “big companies” have large advertising budgets that need to be considered and re-couped in their final sales price.
Like anything, a big part of the quality comes with where the product is made. We know there are plenty of cheap rooftop tents that come out of China, and some that are not so cheap – but is there any difference in the ones that come out of China? Hmmm…. I would rather not comment here, but personally, I wouldn’t buy any rooftop tent that comes out of China….. Even the “expensive” well known brands that come out of China can be an expensive error.
So where would I buy from? Australian made tents are great but can be prohibitively expensive. Don’t get me wrong, they are a well made product, but you need to be prepared to pay for out labour and material costs.
I came across a supplier of South African tents a while back and have been using and dealing in their products for many years now. These tents are great quality and have all the features you would look for in a rooftop tent. They are manufactured from a top quality waterproof ripstop canvas, they are waterproof and mould resistant, they feature an aluminium framework, YKK heavy duty zips, fine mosquito mesh, openable window flaps on all sides, raised nylon fly, taped waterproof stitching, 65mm high density foam mattress, aluminium adjustable sliding ladder and a top quality heavy duty PVC zip on protective travel cover. These tents also come with a 4 sided Zip on Annexe that has a removable floor. The mounting system is so versatile that you can mount these tents on either side of your vehicle or even opening towards the rear of your car. We have also used these tents mounted to our trailer when we set up camp for longer periods.
We have used these tents in all sorts of conditions including severe wind, torrential downpours, 45+ degree (115F) temperatures and temperatures down to freezing. The tents have always remained dry inside and have exceeded our expectations.
These tents have been so great that we have now got 2 of them mounted on the roof of our 100 series Landcruiser.
