The Color Run started in 2011 to promote health, happiness and individuality
by bringing the community together to participate in the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’. The race is un-timed and thousands of runners are doused from head to toe in different colors at every kilometer checkpoint. The idea is really quite simple – you show up wearing white and finish plastered in a rainbow of color!
It certainly didn’t take long for the race to gain popularity – in 2013 there were more than 170 races held in over 30 countries across the world with more than a million runners in total!
The registration fee is around $35 US so it makes it somewhat affordable. First time runners and families are more than welcome to join in and there is even a walking lane for those who need to slow it down.
The run is put on by LLC – a for-profit organization. This annoys some people but LLC seems to care by partnering with a different national or local charity in each town – a shelter, a hospital, etc., who they donate some funds to. Better than no funds being donated, right? LLC also has a global charity partner called Global Poverty Project, which you can check out here.
The cool thing about this race is that there are no winners or official times clocked and the runners all sign up for different reasons. Some as a celebration to their own personal healthy living accomplishments and others, well they’re there for a long list of reasons. What’s your reason?
